ATA unit mourns teachers’ death

ITANAGAR, Jan 03: Arunachal Teachers Association Lower Subansiri district unit has deeply mourned the death of Mom Tagia, who died on Dec 22 last. Late Tagia was serving as AT at government middle school Taniyang Putu, Ziro.

ATA also condoled the death of Manjeet Talukdar, a junior teacher who breathed his last today at Apollo Hospital New Delhi after prolonged illness.  Late Talukdar was serving as JT at Govt Secondary School Joram. Both the teachers were loved and respected by their fellow teachers and students for their sincerity and dedication, the ATA unit said. It conveyed deep sense of condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls.  

 

8th North East Business Summit

ITANAGAR, Dec 03: The 8th North East Business Summit organized by Indian Chamber of Commerce in association with the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region will be held in New Delhi on January 9 and 10.

The focused sectors will be Agro, Food and Processing, Packaging, Tourism, Skill Development, IT, Healthcare, Oil and Gas, Financial Inclusion.

Various Ministers and stalwarts from the industry are expected to attend this two-day summit.

Industry Minister Tapong Taloh will represent Arunachal Pradesh in the summit.

 

Road safety week

ITANAGAR, Jan 03: Along with the  rest of the country, the 24th Road Safety Week is being observed  throughout Arunachal Pradesh from January 1 to 7.  This year theme of the road safety week is “ Stay alive don’t drink and drive.”

 

Vijay Diwas celebrated

BOMDILA, Jan 03: “Vijya Diwas’’ is celebrated every year since 1998, as Victory Day, by Trishakti Foundation in the town of Karad. This year Vijaya Diwas was celebrated from 20 Dec to 23 Dec 2012.

Col. Sambhaji Patil (Retd), the Founder President of Trishakti Foundation, is leading from the front, to ensure total success of this event, for the last 14 years.

For the people of Karad and its surrounding areas, it is an event of the year. They are deeply engaged in the celebrations and it is a splendid example of co-operation by the civilians and uniformed fraternity of the Indian Military.

It is to mention here that India fought a valiant war under the leadership of free India’s most astute and powerful Prime Minister Late Indira Gandhi, against Pakistan, both in the Eastern and the Western sectors. The erstwhile East Pakistan was under domination and exploitation by the West Pakistan. India took the bold initiative to set this right and the Indian Defence Forces assisted the rebellious Mukti Bahini, which finally culminated in total surrender by Pakistan Army. And a new country was born, called Bangladesh, on 16th Dec 1971.

The main event of Military tattoo started in the afternoon of 23 Dec 2012 at the Shivaji Stadium, Karad. It was a grand show of military valour, bravery, physical fitness and endurance by Defence Forces and Police. The school children perform tattoos demonstrating their potential, spirit and youthfulness. The stadium was full to its capacity of more than 40,000 spectators. This year the main attraction was cultural troupe from Arunachal Pradesh, which enthralled the spectators with their outstanding performance.

Dwelling house gutted in fire, union pleads for relief

ITANAGAR, Jan 03: A dwelling house of one Techi Tarin was reportedly gutted down in a fire at Khemlee village under Sagalee circle of Papum Pare district on wee hours today. This was claimed by All Sagalee Students Union (ASSU) in its release here this afternoon. It is reported that all belongings of house owner were burnt to ashes and nothing could be retrieved as the house members were sleeping during the fire mishap. The Union appealed to district administration to provide immediate relief for the fire victims for  their rehabilitation.

 

House gutted Karda Natam

DAPORIJO, Jan 03: The SPT type dwelling house of the DFO, Daporijo near Purna bazaar here was burnt to ashes and properties worth lakhs of rupees damaged when a massive fire broke out at around 1.30 am.

The fire brigade rushed to the spot as soon as they received information about the incident and doused the fire from further spreading. However, the cause of the fire is not yet known.

Meanwhile, the in-charge of the firemen informed that the water pipe was allegedly cut by sharp object and thrown it into the fire by some unknown persons during the first round. They lodged a complaint against the miscreant, who had damaged the water pipe while they were performing their duty.

The staff further alleged receipt of many telephone calls from unknown persons at night time giving false information of fire accidents in and around the township thus wasting time and energy of the firefighters.

 

Selection trial for admission in NSA

ITANAGAR, Jan 03: The Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs will conduct a selection trial at Sangey Lhaden Sports Academy Complex, Chimpu on January 11 from 9 am for selection of students for admission in National Sports Academy, Imphal, Manipur.

The selection trial would be held for Archery, Boxing, Judo, Taekwondo, Wrestling and Boxing for class V pass students of age between 10-12 years and for Weightlifting for class VII pass students of age between 12-13 years.

ACA conducts coaching camp

ITANAGAR, Dec 03: Arunachal Cricket Association (ACA) conducted a special winter cricket coaching camp for various age categories viz. U-14, U-19, U-22 and Junior and Senior women at IG Park Ground here from December 1 to 3.

Over 100 players from various districts of Arunachal Pradesh, including Lower Subansiri, Kurung Kumey, Papum Pare, Capital Complex, Anjaw, Lohit, Upper Subansiri and West Siang participated in the coaching camp.

The coaching camp was conducted by BCCI and NCA trained coach Raju Vals and he was assisted by Lokam Garga.

Meanwhile, ACA secretary Tado Kholi has rued the lack of its own cricket ground. He said that non-availability of its own ground has hampered the development of the sport in the state.

He hoped the latest cricketing tips and techniques imparted by the coach would definitely prove beneficial to the budding cricketers of the state.

Hawai to become one of thebest townships in Arunachal

ITANAGAR, Jan 03: Anjaw may be a very young district of Arunachal Pradesh – in fact it was the youngest till Longding came into existence last year in March – but in terms of pace of development, it is several notches higher up than most of its elder and established siblings. When it comes to planned infrastructural development, it is arguably at the top. Hawai, the district headquarters, indeed is living up to its name!

Credit, without a question, goes to Kalikho Pul, the local legislator, who despite his diminutive physique is known for a sharp brain and precision in doing whatever he does. Chief Minister Nabam Tuki couldn’t agree more!

Accompanied by Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs Ninong Ering, Rajya Sabha MP Mukut Mithi, Education Minister Bosiram Siram, RWD and Tourism Minister Pema Khandu, State Forest Corporation Chairman Tani Loffa and APIDFC Chairperson Yari Dulom, Tuki made a one-day visit of the picturesque district headquarters. Everybody nodded in agreement that Hawai, the way it is going, would become one of the best townships in the state.

To add to the acceleration of Hawai’s growth, not less than ten projects saw the light of day or got their foundations laid during the high profile visit on Wednesday.

The  Chief Minister inaugurated the newly constructed office building of the Deputy Commissioner, an imposing structure that overlooks the township from a hilltop. With spacious rooms and a conference hall, well designed corridors, the double storied building must be the only office in the state (other than hospitals) with a ramp for easy accessibility of disabled people or even the healthy who feels stairs tiresome.

“Anjaw indeed is lucky to have a legislator in Pul,” Tuki commented.

It is well known in Hawai that Pul would regularly visit construction sites and inspect ongoing works. If he found any compromise in quality of construction materials or design, he wouldn’t budge till it was rectified.  While Pema Khandu laid the foundations of the Rural Works Department (RWD), Divisional Office opposite to the DC Office, the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) office building was inaugurated by Ninong Ering. Loffa, on the other hand, inaugurated the building of Water Resource Department that stood just besides the PHED Office proving the impeccable planning gone into selection of sites for the two allied offices.

Similarly, the two buildings of District Horticulture Office (DHO) and District Agriculture Office (DAO) stand side-by-side, something missed by planners elsewhere. The two buildings were also in-principle inaugurated on the day. Accommodation in Hawai will never be a problem for visitors. In addition to existing guest houses of the Urban and Forest departments and the PWD Circuit House a newly constructed Yatri Niwas, adjacent to the Forest guest house, was inaugurated by Mukt Mithi.

On the education front too Anjaw is all set to go. As assured by Tuki earlier, a polytechnic is coming up at Daang in the outskirts of Hawai with picture-perfect natural settings. Laying the foundation stone for it, Education Minister Bosiram Siram also let down the first shovel of concrete mix for construction of the first pillar of the institute.

Meanwhile, as the sites of two important micro-hydel projects are a bit far-off from Hawai, these were inaugurated online. While Tuki inaugurated the 4 MW Longpani Micro-Hydel Project, Mithi inaugurated the 1 MW Hathipani Micro-Hydel Project. Both projects are being implemented by the state Hydropower Development department.

“Ours is a district that will never face power crisis,” a proud Pul said citing both the newly inaugurated projects as well as the 16 MW Haliapani Hydro project, which was almost ready for commissioning when floods damaged it last year.

Besides there are four more functional small hydro power projects in the district and according to Pul, Anjaw can provide power to neighbouring districts of Lohit, Changlang, Lower Dibang Valley and even parts of Assam bordering Arunachal.

Anjaw with eight administrative units – Chaglagam, Metengliang, Hayuliang, Goiliang, Kibithoo, Manchal, Walong and Hawai – and a population of little above twenty-one thousand has come a long way since its inception on December 24, 2004.

Hawai, studded with two-lane black-topped roads, well planned market complexes and office premises, an upcoming artificial lake at its heart, culturally rich people and an uncompromising leader, is indeed the jewel-of-a-town for Arunachal in the making.

 

 

CM in principle agrees to make capital complex a full-fledged district

ITANAGAR, Jan 03: Responding to the plea of Local MLA Techi Kaso, Chief Minister Nabam Tuki announced to grant Capital Complex the status of a full-fledged district in principle besides building two permanent bridges.

Addressing a huge Congress rally at Naharlagun today, he said the proposal has to be approved by the Cabinet before being enacted by the assembly.

Capital Complex is already an administrative unit with a DC and SP and Rs 10 crore has been sanctioned for construction of mini secretariat at its existing office complex, Tuki said to the thunderous applause of the gathering.

The state capital would witness completion of a slew of major development projects in 2013 which would change the face of the capital, Tuki said.

The projects included the Itanagar Water supply project, State Civil Secretariat, assembly building, Convention Hall, MLA apartment, Sky walks, fly-overs, inter-state bus terminus at Leki village, diversion of NH-52A from Papu Nallah to Chimpu and through the Donyi-Polo road for one-way traffic flow and  both bridges over Pachin river most of besides which ease traffic congestion, construction of high court building, IT park, permanent agriculture expo site and multi-purpose stadium at Banderdewa at the place proposed for green field airport which would be build at Hollongi.

Calling a spade a spade, Tuki called upon one and all to rise above all difference to make Itanagar a crime-free city and regain state’s glory as an island of peace.

Exhorting the elders to guide the younger generation from going wayward under the influence of vested interest, the CM said: “It is our capital and our state. We all have to join our hands to set it right lest the law takes its own course. Remember a criminal if booked under non-bailable sections of IPC, the CM cannot influence either to get bail or lessen the punishment. Be on guard before the things go out of control.”

Congress MLAs’ strength grew from 42 to 56 (including an independent legislator) last year in the 60-member house, an unparallel achievement, Tuki said and pleaded the party cadres to contribute to nation building.

Life sprang up in Africa 55,000 years ago and the human races migrated to different parts of the world, APCC president and Rajya Sabha member Mukut Mithi said, adding those who are living in this state are our brothers and sisters.

Pointing out that traffic congestion is a sign of economic growth, Mithi called for united efforts to make Arunachal a model state where all would live peacefully and progress towards a better tomorrow. This could be possible by a strong government with the wholehearted support of the masses, he reasoned.

The rally aimed at formally welcoming the workers of 13 MLAs (PPA-4, NCP-5 and AITC-4) who had joined Congress earlier to strengthen the party, he said.

Citing the example of love of Gandhi-Nehru family, particularly party president Sonia Gandhi for the state and its people, Mithi made a fervent appeal to others to come to Congress fold for a united Arunachal.

Local MLA Techi Kaso appealed to the GoAP for giving Capital Complex the status of a full-fledged district to be rechristened Pachin besides two permanent bridges over Pachin River to link D-sector with Pachin Colony and Leki village with Yupia to tackle the massive traffic congestion of the township. He assured to continue to serve the people to the best of his capacity.

Giving a clarion call to party cadres to strengthen the party, Lok Sabha member Takam Sanjoy reiterated his assurance to work for the overall development of the state.

Terming traffic congestion, bandh and donation culture by insignificant bodies as worst problems of the state, the MP supported the demands of MLA Kaso.

Capital belongs to one and all, he said and advocated a unanimous resolution to end bandh and donation menace and lawlessness in the greater welfare of the state.

Declaring Kaso as the best legislator, Itanagar CCC president Kipa Babu, in his address earlier, clarified that anyone could be a candidate for Itanagar seat. Congress embraces right minded people for greater welfare of the country, Babu said before 1001 – 324 in BCC & 629 in CCC – were welcomed to the party by Mithi and Tuki while Kaso was formally welcomed by the BCC.

A huge gathering attended the rally including host of ministers, parliamentary secretaries, MLAs, the rank and file of the party including APMCC president Yari Dulom and heads of frontal organizations. Colourful cultural programmes punctuated the five-hour long event.

 

 

Nobin to represent India at Dubai International Karate Championship

ITANAGAR, Jan 03: P Nobin Jamoh of Arunachal Pradesh has been selected to represent India at 2nd International Karate Open Championship to be held at Al Ahli Club Sports Complex, Dubai, United Arab Emirates from January 31 to February 2, 2013.

Nobin has been selected on the basis of his performance in the first AIKF Open National Karate Championship held at Thyagaraj Sports Complex, New Delhi in November, where he was placed first in Senior Boys +84kg individual Kumite event, informed Arunachal Karate Association (AKA) general secretary L Marik.

Nobin will participate in Senior Boys +84kg Individual Kumite in the forthcoming event. He completed a hat-trick of karate titles last month. He won the NSKF National Champion at Naharlagun, International Karate title in New Delhi and a National Karate Championship in Jaipur, Rajasthan.

Meanwhile, Nobin credited his performance to guide cum coach Deben Sharma and AKA President Likha Tara.

He was also all praise for Sports Authority of Arunachal Chairman Tapuk Taku and Arunachal Pradesh Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board Chairman Jalley Sonom, who always stand by him and encourage for better performance.

 

 

Arunachal selected for National Krishi Karman Award

ITANAGAR, Jan 03: Arunachal Pradesh has been selected for Krishi Karman Award (a commendation Award) in recognition of its best performance in increase in production of food grains during  2010-11. This was informed by Union Minister of Agriculture & Food Processing Industries, Sharad Pawar through a communication to Agriculture, Horticulture, AH & Dairy Development Minister Setong Sena.

The commendation award would be presented by President of India on 15th January at 11.30 AM at New Delhi. Setong Sena, who is invited to receive the award  would attend the  award giving ceremony. He would be accompanied by Commissioner, Agri, Director (Agri-Marketing) and Director, Agriculture.

This is the first time that Arunachal Pradesh has been selected for  this prestigious award.  It is worth mentioning here that the state has achieved annual growth rate of 4.3 per cent in XI Plan (2007-12) as compared to 2.3 per cent in X Plan (2006-11) in crop production and the national level target of 4 per cent. The state has envisaged annual growth rate of 6.5 per cent in crop production during XII Plan which is an achievable target due to launching of National Food Security Mission(NFSM-Rice) and Chief Minister’s Agri-Mechanization Programme from 2012-13.

 

 

Animation workshop on folklore gets underway at RGU

ITANAGAR, Jan 03: It seems that Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) is blessed by United Kingdom as a three-week long workshop on animation and folktales of Arunachal Pradesh has kick-started here today at RGU extension centre Naharlagun. The first of its kind workshop is being organized jointly by Rajiv Gandhi University and Centre for Cultural Research and Documentation (CCRD) Itanagar in collaboration with   Adivasi Arts Trust UK, a UK based NGO.  

The first such workshop to take place in the remote state will continue till 24th January next. It will provide local tribes of Arunachal an opportunity to explore their own cultural heritage for stories and artistic inspiration for short animation film to represent the vast north eastern state in a collection of animated tribal folktales, Tales of the Tribes. Most of the films in this collection focus on the northeast region with other stories from Sikkim, Nagaland and Manipur.  

Highlighting basic objectives of the workshop Tara Douglas, coordinator, who is also the Secretary of the Adivasi Arts Trust said “Animation might be the right tool to engage young indigenous people in the preservation and revitalization of their culture.” She added that it is new, exciting and dynamic and children all over the world enjoy animation. So why shouldn’t children in Arunachal see their own stories in animation too?  

But it will be hard to choose one story from the 26 major tribes of Arunachal.  Hopefully, this workshop can inspire the young people and show that it is a good idea that deserves Government support, Tara added.

 She further went on to say the film will also promote the culture of Arunachal Pradesh outside India and the Adivasi Arts Trust has many contacts with Indian organizations and groups in the United Kingdom which also enjoy animated tribal folktales. Speaking on the occasion Mamang Dai, a noted writer and poet of the state, explained  value of folktales and mother tongue. She further said that animation is a great art, which brings life alive and makes it useful in conveying the meaning of arts.

During the workshop one favorite story will be selected by participants.  The story will then go through transformation into a film script and a board to interpret it visually. As it becomes animated it will also combine sound and movement.

A team of 3D animators are already at Itanagar as resource persons of the workshop. They include UK animators - Tara Douglas, Jonathan Marchant, Jancece Bachhus, Vijay Punia and Wangdan Wangpam from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. They will train local participants how to build articulated puppets that can be moved and filmed frame by frame, to give the appearance of life.  The artists in turn will help the animators understand the cultural details of the story. Although the workshop does not provide enough time to complete the five minutes long animation film which is expected to require several months of meticulous work, the animators will leave Arunachal Pradesh with a solid plan for the film, which can then be executed with some additional funding.

Among others, CCRD Chairperson Minoti Riba and Prof Tomo Riba, Dean and faculty of environmental science, department of geography, RGU were present. (With inputs from Moji Riba HoD, Mass Com).

 

 

Taloh visits Bogne village, assures relief packages

AALO, Jan 03: Minister for Industry, Textile and Handicrafts Tapang Taloh visited Bogne, a village unconnected by road on the right bank of Siyom river and heard the woes of the 150 households on invitation by the Bogne Welfare Society on January 2.

Though the village is economically prosperous due to vast areas of fertile wet cultivation land, the communication isolation, flood and erosion threat by the Siyom River have been a constant source of worry for the people. Though Govt. aids and assistances have come in the past there is no tangible solution to wipe out the woes of the people.

Addressing a huge gathering on the occasion, Taloh said that the village is prosperous despite communication bottleneck but unity and cooperation of the people is quite essential to hasten development in the village.  He assured to take up the flood damages within the village in consultation with the State Chief Minister and get it sanctioned within two months and improve the road from bridge point to village. He asked the Self Help Group to get their society registered to get the essential funding from the Govt. soon to regenerate their income. The Govt. is committed to promote art, culture, music and traditional folklores, he said.

Opung Jerang, ZPM Jomlo Mobuk appealed all mothers to take care of their children so that they do not fall prey to adolescent abuses which are rampant these days.

N Mize, OSD and former Director of Future Generations Arunachal shared his experiences with national and international level NGO with the people and stressed on conservation of natural resources to maintain balance of nature and health care among the women.

Indigenous Faith Day celebrated

ITANAGAR, Jan 03: Along with rest of the state, the Indigenous Faith Day was celebrated at Central Kargu Gamgi Basar on December 31 in a grand and colorful manner.

A large number of Donyi-Polo believers participated in the celebration. A procession was also taken out at Basar town.

Local MLA Gojen Gadi inaugurated the Gumin Lote constructed under department of tourism on the occasion.  Gadi appealed youth to preserve and protect their culture, faith and indigenous tradition. He assured to help in developing infrastructure for preservation of age-old culture and tradition. He also assured to sanction Rs 3 lakh from MLA local area development Fund for extension of Gumin Lote and Rs 30 lakh for construction of a building for museum.

Bhagubati Prasad, Deputy Commandant ITBP, appealed to the local indigenous people to preserve not only the indigenous faith and culture but also forest and wild animals.

Gojum Basar, Ex-VP Anchal Samati and Tobom Bam, SHDO were the speaker of the celebration who spoke on preservation, promotion, and protection of age-old Galo culture, faith and tradition.

Tago Basar, Ex Director (Agri) and Eken Riba, Ex Minister also spoke on the occasion.

Indigenous Faith Day was also celebrated at Tirbin, Piri, Zirdo, Padi and Dari.

No yield increases

As a continued population growth, rising meat and dairy consumption and expanding biofuel use in the coming decades promise to increase the pressure on global agriculture, China and India, home to over half the world's population, are beset by stagnation in the production of staples like rice, wheat, soybean and maize, says a new study on crop yield growth.

This is the finding of a newly published study that is based on statistics from around the world during the 1951 – 2008 period. Titled, 'Recent patterns of crop yield growth and stagnation', the study published by Nature Communications says that for some crops in China and India, the spatial extent of yield stagnation is more than half the cropped area.

For this study, the scientists developed geographically detailed maps of annual harvested areas and yields of the four staples from 1961 to 2008 to demonstrate that yields in 24–39 per cent of the harvested areas had plateaued or declined in recent years. This was in spite of an increase in crop yields in all regions during the period.

Examining 2.5 million census observations on crop yields from different countries, the study has expressed concern at the findings on rice, wheat and maize which provide 57 per cent of the world’s calories.

For the world’s top three rice producers, China, India and Indonesia, there are no yield gains in 79 per cent, 37 per cent and 81 per cent of their rice croplands, respectively, the researchers point out.

Similarly, top wheat producers, China, India and the United States, show no yield increases in 56 per cent, 70 per cent and 36 per cent of their wheat croplands respectively.
